Lord Vishnu Worshiping Lord Shiva

Once, the Asuras became undefeatable. They started to torture the inhabitants of Earth as well as the Devas. The Devas approached Lord Vishnu after being defeated by the Asuras. However, even Lord Vishnu was not able to suppress the acts of the Asuras. To get a solution, Vishnu went to Mt.Kailash and started praying Lord Shiva. He worshipped by chanting the Sahasranama( thousand names) of Shiva.

He tossed a lotus at the Shiva Linga after chanting each name. To test Vishnu’s devotion, Shiva hid one of the lotuses Vishnu brought for the puja. At the end of the Sahasranama, Vishnu found that he was short of one lotus. He started searching for that flower. He couldn’t find it even after searching the whole world. Without being disheartened, Vishnu tossed one of his lotus-like eyes at the Shiva Linga to finish the puja. Lord Shiva became extremely pleased watching this. He appeared before Vishnu and asked.

“Sri Hari! I will grant your wish. Ask for anything.”

Vishnu replied, “Oh Lord! The Asuras are threatening the whole world. We are all in great anguish because of that. I don’t have enough weapons to face them.”

After hearing this, Lord Shiva gave Vishnu the Sudarshana Chakra(the divine bladed disc) that he had. Lord Vishnu thus successfully defeated the Asuras using this Sudarshana Chakra ..

Light Up The Darkest Of Places

With the skies dark outside and pelting rain, it seemed appropriate that I got a Forward from a nun friend a prayer which says, “Woman of God, let your light shine in the darkest places, where it is impossible to love.“ That was a challenge to me, since I have been feeling unloving to many of late.

The darkest places are often the places of sin, where accumulated hatreds and prejudices have corroded the soul over many years. In what way could I help the divine light to penetrate the darkness? The first thing I thought of was that I could smile more often, to bring cheer all around.

I could be more gracious even if I met with hostility . I could share a biscuit with a friend and I could give them a good book or article to read. Perhaps, I could help an elderly person clear her fridge of old food. I could be feeling uncomfortable and irritated by the noise made by young students in the lift, but I could try to be friendly, not always grouchy .

The list makes me sound like an old woman already , but it is true. I am no longer able to do remarkable things, but the darkest places for me are those just around my little room, where I could still meet the unmet needs of those who are now frail, feeble and in the evening of their lives.

The journey within is the hardest of all because that’s where we encounter the most darkness. The same prayer says that God is there for us, always with us, with unconditional love. And so, when I wake up in the morning, I thank Him for the grace of a good night’s sleep. I welcome the canteen boy , when he walks in with my break fast tray at the YWCA, whether it is upma, idli, poha or masala dosa. Just as the joys of life have become small ones, the ways in which I spread God’s light have become small too.

When I first read the prayer about shining in the darkest places, my thoughts went instantly to working for prisoners, criminals, prostitutes and what have you. Ruminating on it after my afternoon siesta, I began to think differently . The darkness is where I am at the moment. All I need to do is to become a little more human by accepting my flaws and limitations.

It is strange how `holy’ people try to be`perfect’, when all they are asked to do is to accept their imperfections and work with them to help recreate the world. God’s love is after all for `imperfect’ human beings like us.

When I look at God’s creations, I can see that there are human beings of every shape, size and colour, sometimes even the absurd and ridiculous. So few are `beautiful’ in the sense of physical beauty . To love all these is to bring the light of love to the darkest places. Simpler than we thought, isn’t it?

This is an ordinary recipe for ordinary folk like you and me. So, now I do not think of `Woman of God’ as an awesome title that I can never inherit. In my own little room and with the little I do, I can still be a `Woman of God’. I will live and work quietly and I hope I will die quietly. And I hope to find the gates of heaven opened for me because I smiled often, joked sometimes and gave the canteen boy a small tip for fetching my tea.

The Secret Of True Success

Whatever we do, we want a return. We are all traders. We are traders in life, we are traders in virtue, we are traders in religion. And alas! we are also traders in love.If you come to trade, if it is a question of give-and-take, if it is a question of buy-and-sell, abide by the laws of buying and selling. There is a bad time and there is a good time; there is a rise and a fall in prices: always expect the blow to come…We get caught. How? Not by what we give, but by what we expect. We get misery in return for our love; not from the fact that we love, but from the fact that we want love in return. There is no misery where there is no want. Desire is the father of all misery. Desires are bound by the laws of success and failure. The great secret of true success, of true happiness, then, is this: the man who asks for no return, the perfectly unselfish man, is the most successful.

Siva And Tattvas-2

In the Saiva Siddhanta, there are 36 Tattvas of which 24 are known as Atma Tattvas, 7 as Vidya Tattvas, and the remaining 5 as Siva Tattvas. The 24 Atma Tattvas are the 5 elements, ether, air, fire, water and earth; the 5 Tanmatras, sound, touch, form, taste and smell; the 5 sense-organs, ear, skin, eye, palate and nose; the internal organ; the 5 motor organs, speech, hand, foot, anus and the generative organ; and Ahankara, Buddhi and Guna. The 7 Vidya Tattvas are Purusha, Raga (love), Vidya (knowledge), Kala (art), Niyati (order), Kaala (time) and Asuddha (impure) Maya. The 5 Siva Tattvas are Suddha Vidya, Isvara, Sadasiva, Sakti and Siva.

Maya evolves into the subtle principles and then into the gross. The individual soul experiences pleasure and pain through Vidya. Siva Tattva is the basis of all consciousness and action. It is undifferentiated (Nishkala) Suddha. Maya, the Sakti of Siva starts her activities. Then Siva becomes the experiencer. Then He is called Sadasiva known also by the name Sadakhya, who is not really separate from Siva. The Suddhamaya becomes active. Then Siva, the experiencer becomes the Ruler. He is then Isvara, who is not really separate from Sadasiva. Suddhavidya is the cause of true knowledge.

The five activities (Pancha-Krityas) of the Lord are Srishti (creation), Sthiti (preservation), Samhara (destruction), Tirobhava (veiling) and Anugraha (grace). These, separately considered, are the activities of Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Mahesvara and Sadasiva.

In the five-lettered Mantra (Panchakshari) ‘Namassivaya’, Na is the screening power of the Lord that makes the soul to move in the world, Ma is the bond that binds him in the Samsaric wheel of the births and deaths, Si is the symbol for Lord Siva, Va stands for His grace and Ya stands for the soul. If the soul turns towards Na and Ma he will be sunk in worldliness. If he associates himself with Va he will move towards Lord Siva.

Hearing the Lilas of Lord Siva and the significance of Panchakshara, is ‘Sravana’. Reflection on the meaning of Panchakshara is ‘Manana’ or ‘Chintana’. To develop love and devotion for Lord Siva and meditate on Him, is ‘Sivadhyana’. To become immersed in ‘Sivananda’, is ‘Nishtha’ or ‘Samadhi’. He who attains this stage is called Jivanmukta.

Why Did God Create the World? Part 5

But why does the mind project the dream world? We may give many reasons for the same, but finally we would come to the conclusion that it is the nature of the mind to do so.

Why does fire burn? What is its motive behind burning? Because, it is its nature to do so. In the cause-effect chain one ultimately comes to the conclusion that the Truth/God projects the world because it is its nature to do so.

Devasya esa svabhavastu aptkamasya ka spriha

It is the nature of the Truth (to project the world) as the fulfilled(Infinite) can have no craving (desire to create out of incompleteness).

If the world is an appearance, it cannot be real. But it is experienced, so it cannot be totally unreal. Then what is it, real or unreal? Also it does not seem to satisfy us that the purpose of creating the world is that it is the nature of the Truth to do so. Could this be explained differently?

True. The world cannot be absolutely real as the real (sic) is that which is always present. The world gets negated in our deep sleep state. Also the world cannot be totally unreal (asat) as it is experienced by us. It is only relatively real (mithya) and therefore an appearance. Then what is absolutely real? “I” the experiencer of the world never gets negated . I can never experience my absence. Hence the Self alone is absolutely real. Vedanta says that you (not as a name and form) as pure Existence are the cause of the world, you have within you all the answers about creation. Enquire deeply and discover that Truth, all else will become clear. Do not wait for answers from others.

It is said that all that there is in the totality exists also in the individual (yatha pinde tatha brahmande). So let us think how we create anything. Initially we become conscious of our potential to create. Once we are aware of our ability we cannot help but express it. When a child realizes that it can talk, it prattles on endlessly without purpose. Having expressed our creative ability we identify with it, get attached and then suffer, e.g. a child is born I call it my child, get attached to it and then suffer. For example, I perchance become aware that I can sing. Initially I sing in the bathroom for the sheer joy of it. Later I sing to others and once I become a professional, I seek applause and money, where once I sought neither. For example I become rich and realize that I can build my own house. I plan and build one. I start living in it and then become a householder. That is, one who is held by his house! I become a prisoner of my own creation.

Om Gan Ganapathaya

With this mantra, we invoke Lord Ganesha, welcoming Him into our hearts. Enter most houses in India, and you are sure to find art works of Ganesha—a stone sculpture greets you at the entrance; there could be an occasional painting in the corridor and of course, figurines in brass or marble stand in their resplendent glory on mantelpieces. The God of Beginnings, He is also invoked as a Patron of Letters during writing sessions. Stories about His birth have been narrated through the ages; His lineage is fascinating…the second son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, He is said to have been created by Parvati from the dirt of Her body. As a remover of obstacles, Ganesha is the god we turn to when in trouble or when we are starting something new.

Most conflicts arise because we tend to complicate life instead of simplifying it. Our expectations of others are so high that it becomes impossible for them to meet those expectations. We want to only receive all the time; our greed knows no limits. However, a greedy life is an imbalanced life. The seema rekha or limit cannot be mathematically defined. Your heart has to tell you when to stop. Simplify life to enrich it. Shed the extra baggage that is weighing you down, preventing you from making the most of the present moment.
