Dream On, But Sleep Is Very Important, Too

Everybody dreams. Some remember their dreams; others don’t. The brain never sleeps; neural pathways are always active, whether mediated by ego during waking state or without it, as happens during sleep. Activation of neural pathways produces dreams.

During sleep, we go through four to five cycles of deep sleep and dreaming episodes, each of roughly 90 minutes duration. Electro-encephalography (EEG) studies done on the human brain during sleep, show that deep sleep is characterised by production of low frequency (1-4 Hz) Delta waves, known to help produce life and mood-enhancing chemicals. At this stage, we are totally unaware of our surroundings. But, dreaming episodes characterised by rapid eye movement (REM), are of light sleep kind, from which one can be woken up quite easily .

Dreams are both internal and external. Since ego, the director, is absent during sleep, neural pathways have free run. Thus, day-long experiences or existing memories are the driving force for internal dreams. When there is sanyam or tremendous thinking activity on a particular thought during waking time, it leads sometimes to solution-dreams.Several great inventions and discoveries have come through such dreaming process.

Externality of dreams comes because brain is both receiver and transmitter of human thought. Hence during sleep, memories or signals from knowledge-space impinge on the brain and may modify neural pathways. This can give rise to strange dreams of events and places never visited or interacted with. This is also the mechanism of getting prophetic dreams of which there are many instances. Why don’t we remember dreams? Brain scientists say part of it is to do with creating long-term memory . But it is dreams we remember that make life interesting. We still don’t know why we dream. A possible answer may lie in how synapses behave during sleep.

Synapses are connections between two neurons; they allow the transfer of information through passage of neuro-chemicals across the synaptic cleft, the distance (about 0.02 micron) between neuron and synapse that exchanges neurochemicals.

Scientists have found that during deep sleep, the synaptic cleft widens by about 20%. Perhaps it helps in allowing the cerebro spinal fluid to flow through it and to remove toxins from the brain.

The more we dream during the night, the less restful is the sleep. A really restful sleep is deep sleep without dreams. This helps in flushing out toxic material from major part of the brain. Besides this, the increase of synaptic cleft may also help in explaining the dreaming process.

During sleep, neural pathways are active without ego, so circuit production is quite random. But only those pathways produce circuits in which neural connections are still strong. Thus “loosened“ synapses or those with increased synaptic cleft might not take part in the information transfer and hence, in the dreaming process. So dreams could be random in nature. Besides, this loosening of neural pathways may also explain the removal of some memories of day-long experiences. Sleep is therefore necessary to remove clutter or irrelevant information from the brain.

Too often, we have dreams connected with our suppressed desires; most are based on unfulfilled emotional needs and psychological knots based on strong memories that do not get loosened during sleep and cause recurring dreams. Resolution of these knots through wisdom allows the loosening of strong memories and helps in brain detoxification, producing dreamless sleep.

We Need to Make the Blood Alkaline

See, the kind of food that we eat in India is acidic in nature. Eating acidic food causes joint pain, lethargy and diseases in our body. So what should we do about this? We need to make the blood alkaline to balance this. So I would suggest you to drink alkaline water. Do this and see how it brings a change in your health.

All vegetables are alkaline, while fruits are mainly acidic. Spices, rice and even milk is acidic. So you need to change this. Two to three hours after your meals, you should drink some alkaline water. Do not drink it immediately before or after your food, as the food will not get digested properly.

How can you make water alkaline? Take one litre of water, put four cut pieces of cucumber and two small pieces of lemon in it. Keep this overnight and the water becomes alkaline. Drink a glass of this alkaline water two to three hours after your food. Or if you have already drunk some alkaline water, then you should leave a gap of at least one to two hours before you have eat your meals. Try this and see how the pH of your blood becomes better.

Reduce the quantity of grains and cereals in your meals. Food should get well digested. We eat so much and then it does not get digested well, because of which you experience cramps and aches in the body. So once every few days, do not have any grains or cereals in your meals at all, just have raw or boiled vegetables.

We have a tradition in our country that on the days of Ekadashi, we fast and do not take any grains. Why is this so? For 15 days we consume all sorts of grains and rice, and that creates acidity in the body. By fasting and avoiding grains completely for one day, that phenomenon (of acidity) gets reversed.

Nowadays we have left that tradition, or sometimes we do not get time to follow it properly. So, every two to three months, for a few days, you should only have boiled vegetables with a little salt, and no grains at all. Do this and see what good change you experience in your health.

We often boil vegetables too much, and drain away all the water in which the vegetables have been boiled. When we do this, all the nutrients are lost and we eat only the remaining portion, which is not very nutritious. You should not boil them too much, except potatoes.

Eating potatoes raw is no good. Usually in India, people often have tomatoes, potatoes and brinjals, and eat less of green vegetables. We should consume more of green vegetables.

Do you know, drumsticks are so rich in vitamins and minerals. It is said that the leaves of the drumstick tree have nutrition equal to 10 bananas and 20 oranges. Our body should get balanced and nutritious food.

Future – 3

Business opportunities: If you think of a niche you want to go in, ask yourself: “in the future, do you think we will have that?” and if the answer is yes, how can you make that happen sooner? If it doesn’t work with your phone, forget the idea. And any idea designed for success in the 20th century is doomed in to failure in the 21st century.

Work: 70-80% of jobs will disappear in the next 20 years. There will be a lot of new jobs, but it is not clear if there will be enough new jobs in such a small time.

Agriculture: There will be a 100$ agricultural robot in the future. Farmers in 3rd world countries can then become managers of their field instead of working all days on their fields. Aeroponics will need much less water. The first petri dish produced veal is now available and will be cheaper than cow produced veal in 2018. Right now, 30% of all agricultural surfaces is used for cows. Imagine if we don’t need that space any more. There are several start ups who will bring insect protein to the market shortly. It contains more protein than meat. It will be labelled as “alternative protein source” (because most people still reject the idea of eating insects).

There is an app called “moodies” which can already tell in which mood you are. Until 2020 there will be apps that can tell by your facial expressions if you are lying. Imagine a political debate where it’s being displayed when they are telling the truth and when not.

Bitcoin will become mainstream this year and might even become the default reserve currency.

Longevity: Right now, the average life span increases by 3 months per year. Four years ago, the life span used to be 79 years, now it’s 80 years. The increase itself is increasing and by 2036, there will be more that one year increase per year. So we all might live for a long long time, probably way more than 100.

Education: The cheapest smartphones are already at 10$ in Africa and Asia. Until 2020, 70% of all humans will own a smartphone. That means, everyone has the same access to world class education. Every child can use Khan academy for everything a child learns at school in First World countries. We have already released our software in Indonesia and will release it in Arabic, Suaheli and Chinese this Summer, because I see an enormous potential. We will give the English app for free, so that children in Africa can become fluent in English within half a year.

Insurance companies will have massive trouble because without accidents, the insurance will become 100x cheaper. Their car insurance business model will disappear.
Real estate will change. Because if you can work while you commute, people will move further away to live in a more beautiful neighbourhood.
Electric cars will become mainstream until 2020. Cities will be less noisy because all cars will run on electric. Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean: Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, but you can only now see the impact. Last year, more solar energy was installed worldwide than fossil. The price for solar will drop so much that all coal companies will be out of business by 2025.
With cheap electricity comes cheap and abundant water. Desalination now only needs 2kWh per cubic meter. We don’t have scarce water in most places, we only have scarce drinking water. Imagine what will be possible if anyone can have as much clean water as he wants, for nearly no cost.

Health: The Tricorder X price will be announced this year. There will be companies who will build a medical device (called the “Tricorder” from Star Trek) that works with you phone, which takes your retina scan, you blood sample and you breath into it. It then analyses 54 bio markers that will identify nearly any disease. It will be cheap, so in a few years everyone on this planet will have access to world class medicine, nearly for free.

3D printing: The price of the cheapest 3D printer came down from 18,000$ to 400$ within 10 years. In the same time, it became 100 times faster. All major shoe companies started 3D printing shoes. Spare air plane parts are already 3D printed in remote airports. The space station now has a printer that eliminates the need for the large amount of spare parts they used to have in the past.
At the end of this year, new smartphones will have 3D scanning possibilities. You can then 3D scan your feet and print your perfect shoe at home. In China, they already 3D printed a complete 6-storey office building. By 2027, 10% of everything that’s being produced will be 3D printed.

In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide.
Within just a few years, their business model disappeared and they got bankrupt.
What happened to Kodak will happen in a lot of industries in the next 10 year – and most people don’t see it coming. Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later you would never take pictures on paper film again?
Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore’s law. So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a long time, before it became way superior and got mainstream in only a few short years. It will now happen with Artificial Intelligence, health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs. Welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Software will disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5-10 years.
Uber is just a software tool, they don’t own any cars, and are now the biggest taxi company in the world. Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don’t own any properties.

Artificial Intelligence: Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world. This year, a computer beat the best Go player in the world, 10 years earlier than expected. In the US, young lawyers already don’t get jobs. Because of IBM Watson, you can get legal advice (so far for more or less basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% accuracy compared with 70% accuracy when done by humans. So if you study law, stop immediately. There will be 90% less lawyers in the future, only specialists will remain.
Watson already helps nurses diagnosing cancer, 4 time more accurate than human nurses. Facebook now has a pattern recognition software that can recognize faces better than humans. In 2030, computers will become more intelligent than humans.

Autonomous cars: In 2018 the first self driving cars will appear for the public. Around 2020, the complete industry will start to be disrupted. You don’t want to own a car any more. You will call a car with your phone, it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. You will not need to park it, you only pay for the driven distance and can be productive while driving. Our kids will never get a driver’s licence and will never own a car. It will change the cities, because we will need 90-95% less cars for that. We can transform former parking space into parks. 1,2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide. We now have one accident every 100,000km, with autonomous driving that will drop to one accident in 10 million km. That will save a million lives each year.

Most car companies might become bankrupt. Traditional car companies try the evolutionary approach and just build a better car, while tech companies (Tesla, Apple, Google) will do the revolutionary approach and build a computer on wheels. I spoke to a lot of engineers from Volkswagen and Audi; they are completely terrified of Tesla.

बीबीसी ऑनलाइन में छपी एक रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक शोधकर्ता क्रिस बर्ड्स ने दिमागी ताकतों पर शोध किया है। उनकी रिपोर्ट में यह सवाल उठाया गया है कि आखिरकार वह क्या कारण है जिससे हम बातों को लंबे समय तक याद नहीं रख पाते।

बर्ड्स का कहना है कि कई बार हम आंखों से कोई दृश्य देखते हैं, लेकिन जब दोबारा से हमसे कोई उस दृश्य की व्याख्या मांगता है तो हम उसे टूटे-फूटे अंदाज़ में बताते हैं। असल में किस घटना के बाद कौन सा पल आया हम ठीक से याद नहीं कर पाते हैं, ऐसा क्यों!

इसका उत्तर और साथ ही इसका समाधान निकालने के लिए भी बर्ड्स ने कुछ लोगों पर शोध किया। इस शोध के अंतर्गत उसने कुछ लोगों को ब्रेन स्कैनर के भीतर रहते हुए यूट्यूब पर कुछ वीडियो देखने को कहा। वीडियो देखने के तुरंत बाद ही कम से कम 40 सेकेंड के लिए दोबारा से उस वीडियो के दृश्यों को दिमाग में याद करने को कहा।

इससे बर्ड्स को यह हासिल हुआ कि वीडियो देखने के तुरंत बाद ही जब लोगों ने खुद के दिमाग को ही उस वीडियो के दृश्यों को समझाया तो वे उसे और भी अच्छे से याद रखने में सफल हुए। जब उनसे थोड़ी देर बाद वीडियो के बार में पूछा गया तो बिना किसी गलती के उन्होंने वीडियो को बिल्कुल सही तरीके से समझाया।

इसका कारण बर्ड्स ने बताया कि जब वे वीडियो को देख रहे थे तो शायद उसे एंज्वाय कर रहे थे, लेकिन जब वीडियो देखने के तुरंत बाद उन्हें उसे याद करने को कहा गया था तब उन्होंने अपनी असली प्रक्रिया शुरू की। इस प्रक्रिया में उन्होंने वीडियो के एक-एक दृश्य को दिमाग में जोड़ा, उससे एक कहानी बनाई और यह कहानी अंतत: पूरी वीडियो के रूप में उनके सामने आई।

ऐसा करते हुए वे वीडियो को कई बार अपनी खुद की लाइफ से या अपने पसंदीदा लोगों से जोड़ते हैं। जैसे कि वीडियो के किसी विशेष दृश्य में देखा हुआ इंसान यदि उन्हें किसी प्रसिद्ध कलाकार जैसा लगा, तो वे उस दृश्य को कभी भूलेंगे नहीं।

बर्ड्स के मुताबिक बातों को याद रख सकने का यह तरीका काफी काम का है। उदाहरण के लिए यदि आप किसी दुर्घटना के इकलौते गवाह बन गए हैं, आपने वह घटना घटते हुए अपनी आंखों से देखा लेकिन धीरे-धीरे जब तक बयान देने का समय आया, आपके दिमाग में घटना संबंधी दृश्य धुंधले पड़ने लगे।

यदि उस समय कोई बातों को याद करने के इस तरीके को अपनाए तो वह शायद कभी भी उस घटना को भुला नहीं सकेगा। बर्ड्स के मुताबिक घटना के तुरंत बाद केवल आधा मिनट का समय भी उस दृश्य को लंबे समय तक याद रख सकने के लिए काफी है।

Harald Haas: Forget Wi-Fi. Meet the new Li-Fi Internet-2

Now what I would like to do first is switch on the light, and I’ll simply, only switch on the light, for a moment, and what you’ll notice is that the instrument jumps to the right. So the solar cell, for a moment, is harvesting energy from this artificial light source. If I turn it off, we see it drops. I turn it on … So we harvest energy with the solar cell.

But next I would like to activate the streaming of the video. And I’ve done this by pressing this button. So now this LED lamp here is streaming a video by changing the brightness of the LED in a very subtle way, and in a way that you can’t recognize with your eye, because the changes are too fast to recognize. But in order to prove the point, I can block the light of the solar cell. So first you notice the energy harvesting drops and the video stops as well. If I remove the blockage, the video will restart.

And I can repeat that. So we stop the transmission of the video and energy harvesting stops as well. So that is to show that the solar cell acts as a receiver.

But now imagine that this LED lamp is a street light, and there’s fog. And so I want to simulate fog, and that’s why I brought a handkerchief with me.

And let me put the handkerchief over the solar cell. First you notice the energy harvested drops, as expected, but now the video still continues. This means, despite the blockage, there’s sufficient light coming through the handkerchief to the solar cell, so that the solar cell is able to decode and stream that information, in this case, a high-definition video.

What’s really important here is that a solar cell has become a receiver for high-speed wireless signals encoded in light, while it maintains its primary function as an energy-harvesting device. That’s why it is possible to use existing solar cells on the roof of a hut to act as a broadband receiver from a laser station on a close by hill, or indeed, lamp post.

And It really doesn’t matter where the beam hits the solar cell. And the same is true for translucent solar cells integrated into windows, solar cells integrated into street furniture, or indeed, solar cells integrated into these billions of devices that will form the Internet of Things. Because simply, we don’t want to charge these devices regularly, or worse, replace the batteries every few months.

As I said to you, this is the first time I’ve shown this in public. It’s very much a lab demonstration, a prototype. But my team and I are confident that we can take this to market within the next two to three years. And we hope we will be able to contribute to closing the digital divide, and also contribute to connecting all these billions of devices to the Internet. And all of this without causing a massive explosion of energy consumption — because of the solar cells, quite the opposite.
