Keep the fun factors going!! – Weight & You

Sticking to your goals and diet plan and achieving those calls for applause. Keep yourself motivated till the goal is accomplished. With your daily yoga routine try to include these over the weekend.

Go out with your friends on short trek on the outskirts of the city. Being outdoors help you to be close to the nature and gives you the required break from your yoga schedule.

Plan a beach trip –

When was the last when you walked barefoot on the white sands of the blue seas and the froth of the waves kissing your feet? Make the best of the beach trip by walking on the never ending shores and don’t forget to carry your yoga mat.

Bicycle anyone?

Bicycling is another outdoor activity which gives you a good workout and with friends around you won’t even come to know the distance you have travelled. It’s important to be outdoors as it elevates you, gives you the required break and helps you prepare for the yoga routine coming week. Most important of all is that these activities have helped you torch down calories. You can excuse yourself for the slice of pizza at the end of the day.

Prakriti or nature

The Lingam Purana states

meaning:

The foremost Lingam which is devoid of colour, taste, hearing, touch etc is spoken of as Prakriti or nature.

The nature itself is a Lingam (or symbol) of Shiva. When we see nature, we infer the presence of its creator – Shiva. Shiva Lingam is the mark of Shiva the creator, Shiva the sustainer and Shiva the destructor. It also dispels another myth in which Shiva is considered only as a destructor.

Another authentic reference comes from Skanda Purana where lingam is clearly indicated as the supreme Shiva from where the whole universe is created and where it finally submerges.

The endless sky (that great void which contains the entire universe) is the Linga, the Earth is its base. At the end of time the entire universe and all the Gods finally emerge in the Linga itself.

Now this should clarify the settle the doubts once and forever.

The self is the centre of the whole creation

Everything in the world is dynamic and changes.

This seen world is eliminated. It conveys you a message. It gives you an idea of how great the consciousness is. Every aspect in the world is an expression of God. Everything is active.

“Prakasha” means manifesting. Everything is manifested from the consciousness. We manifest, flowers come out. Everything in this universe is dynamic. It is not static. There is nothing that is static. Even though the mountains appear to be static, they are not static. They are all dynamic. Every atom is dynamic.

“Sthiti”. They all undergo certain stage of evolution. Everything has a stage, has a state. Everything is governed by certain principles and certain qualities.

“Bhutendriyatmakam”. The entire creation is made up of five elements. Five elements, five sense organs, five organs of perception and five organs of action. These are the ten organs. The entire creation is endowed by these ten. The mind is also a part of the creation.

“Bhoga apavargartham.” This entire creation is there to give you pleasure and relief. Whatever gives you pleasure will also give you relief. Do you see what I am saying? Otherwise the pleasure becomes a pain.

You like beautiful music. How long can you enjoy music? One hour, two hours, some of us twenty four hours music, seven days a week! You cannot breathe. You shut it off! That wonderful music which gave you so much pleasure, if its over done, that brings you pain. So that has to give you relief also. Do you see that? The entire creation gives you enjoyment and liberation and relieves you. You have to get yourself liberated from all this at some time or the other. Otherwise that becomes pain.

“The self is pure consciousness only, but when it gets mixed up with the intellect, it gets covered.”

The self, though it is ever pure, untainted, it is just a witness. But when it becomes one with the buddhi, the intellect, then it gets colored. It appears as though it is colored. Somebody who is stuck with their intellect, they just stick to their thoughts and ideas as though it is their own. They suffer a lot. The self is the centre of the whole creation.

Gentleman

Swami Vivekananda, the awesome and brilliant monk, clad in his saffron robe, was taking a stroll in Chicago. The year was 1893. The outfit seemed unusual. A couple, dressed in formals, were ranging the same sidewalk as him and the lady said to her man, “I don’t think he’s a gentleman.” Her statement reached Swami’s ears. He went up to the couple and said, “Excuse me for I overheard your remark. In your country, the tailor makes a man gentleman but in my country, it is the character.”

I don’t know what happened afterwards and it’s immaterial in the current context. But was the woman right in her thinking? And was Swami right in his response? Actually, it does not matter. The lady expressed what she felt and she did so not directly to Vivekananda but to her partner. If you retain the right to carry yourself however you like, let others have the freedom to form their opinions. Media, society, advertising, religion, they all bombard you with stereotypes, sometimes subtly and many a time explicitly. The more you let others’ opinions matter to you, the more you move away from your internal source of happiness. Besides, albeit on an extraneous note, I am doubtful if Vivekananda’s statement holds much truth in the contemporary India where corruption, at all levels and in all sectors, is more an accepted way of life than a grave governance issue.

Unfortunately, it almost seems that anyone who gets the opportunity is ready to plunder. Whether that’s a business person trying to dodge the taxes, or the employee polishing his time sheet, or a government worker who doesn’t mind openly asking for his cut or kickbacks. People who are honest, not because of fear and governance but out of morality and choice, are rare gems. There are many workers of honesty but a few volunteers. There may be an emotional denial to my statement but the facts are staring right into the truth — and it is not beautiful to the sane eyes.

Keep yourself happy

Q: Guruji, no matter what I do to please my husband he is never happy. He keeps finding faults in me. What should I do?

Guruji: If you know that this is his habit then why are you getting so disturbed? Accept him and move on. Keep yourself happy. If you do not get disturbed by his behaviour then he will start to change. Every person has some or the other negative quality in them. And these negative qualities are also there to push your buttons, so that you become strong. Once you become strong, then they will start to change. In life, everything changes, and there are some things that do not change. We need to accept both these situations.

=====================

The path of the Buddha consists of the fundamental qualities of intellect and emotion. Awareness of phenomena and self-inquiry relate primarily to intellect. While developing an ability to feel compassion for all is a function of the heart.

The pilgrimage from impermanent suffering to permanent peace can be attained through eightfold path which consists of ethical conduct, right observation, introspection, mindfulness and advanced meditation. Buddhist meditation is neither an exercise in relaxation nor an effort for an elevated state of consciousness. It is basically about living in each moment and observing the flow of phenomena.

Nirvana is neither nihilistic nor sinking into bottomless oblivion. It involves dwelling in a state of non-reactive witnessing of reality knowing fully well that there is neither a doer nor sufferer but mere flow of phenomena amidst universal flux of mind and matter. Just as a man shudders with horror stepping on a snake but laughs finding it to be only a rope, so too when we find there is no such thing as me or mine we get settled in peace and enjoy the amazing cosmic drama of creation. The Buddha’s way offers permanent panacea for the pain of existence.
