Significance of Baisakhi in India

Significance of Baisakhi in India

Baiskhi is also spelled ‘Vaisakhi’, vibrant Festival of Baisakhi is considered to be an extremely important festival in India for number of reasons. Apart from being important for the farmers as a harvest festival, the festival is of prime importance in Sikhism as a foundation day of Khalsa Panth. Besides, auspicious Baisakhi day is of importance for astrological reasons too!!

Astrological Significance of Baisakhi

The festival of Baisakhi falls on April 13 every year and April 14 once in every 36 years.

Change in date is because of the fact that date of Baisakhi is reckoned according to the solar calendar. Astrologically, the date of Baisakhi is significant as marks sun’s entry into Mesh Rashi. For this very reason, many people also know Baisakhi as Mesha Sankranti. The auspicious date of Baisakhi is celebrated all over India under different names and rituals. It is celebrated as ‘Rongali Bihu’ in Assam, ‘Naba Barsha’ in Bengal, ‘Puthandu’ in Tamil Nadu, ‘Pooram Vishu’ in Kerala and‘Vaishakha’ in the state of Bihar.

Significance of Baisakhi for Farmers

For the agriculturally rich state of Punjab and Haryana, Baisakhi marks the time for harvest of Rabi (winter) crops and is therefore extremely significant for the farmers. Baisakhi Festival is also celebrated as a Thanksgiving Day festival in these states. After waking up early and dressing themselves in new clothes, farmers visit temples and gurdwaras to express gratitude to God for the good harvest and seek blessing for ensuing agriculture season. Farmers also celebrate Baisakhi by performing energetic bhangra and gidda dance and participating in Baisakhi Fairs.

The Will And Wisdom Of The Divine

“Meeting a stranger can be totally fleeting and meaningless, for example, unless you enter the individual’s world by finding out at least one thing that is meaningful to his or her life and exchange at lest one genuine feeling. Tuning in to others is a circular flow: you send yourself out toward people; you receive them as they respond to you.”

==========================

The Will And Wisdom Of The Divine :

The highest wisdom of man lies in surrendering his will to the Will and Wisdom of the Divine. He has to surrender to the Divine Will anyway, because he has no choice. Surrendering to the Divine Wisdom means accepting what has happened happily. If man cannot see anything good or positive in what has happened, it is because his wisdom is limited. Accepting his limitation, if man surrenders also to the Divine Wisdom, he is happy in the faith that there must be something good in what has happened, because what has happened has behind it not only the Will but also the Wisdom of the Divine.

A tribute to the mirror symbolism in Devi worship

The rate at which violence is increasing, if it continues to increase at this pace, then the wealth in terms of the animal population will be destroyed. And the non-vegetarian human beings will begin to eat other human beings! Such men are called demoniac ones (demons). Such a situation took place even during the incarnation of Lord Ram, where the demons ate up holy men leaving piles of human bones.

Deep Reflections

A tribute to the mirror symbolism in Devi worship

The mirror is a symbol of physical and spiritual reflection in cultures across regions. In India, especially in Kerala and West Bengal, why do devotees place metallic mirrors behind images of Kali and Durga?

The people of Bengal believe that it is inauspicious to look directly at Kali during invocation of the deity. In Kerala, the mirror becomes the subject of veneration when it is associated with Goddess Bhagavati. Consecration rituals are identical for both the kannati-bimbam, or the mirror-image, and the idols, which are thereafter considered divine representations. In the Shinto faith of Japan, the metal mirror symbolises the mother goddess.

Kannati Bimbam explores the mother goddess rituals of Kerala. The installations are inspired by the use of val-kannati or mirror with long handle, an auspicious object used in rituals that are part of Vishu, the day when farmers sow the first paddy of the season or when the auspicious mirror is held by girls during the coming-of-age ceremony, weddings, pregnancy rites, and the naming ceremony of girl children.

“Venerating the kannati-bimbam is one of the highest forms of worship in northern Kerala. It is the visible symbol of ‘Aham Brahmasmi’ — ‘I am Brahmn’ — and this state of realisation is achieved through dedication and intense contemplation. The seeker looks at the kannati-bimbam, observes his own image reflected in the mirror, and meditates upon it. Traditionally, a val-kannati is cast in a bronze alloy, about 15 to 20 cm in diameter, with a long handle of the same length, with its round-edged, flat surface polished to a mirror finish. The artist quotes from the Svetasvatara Upanishad:
‘Even as a mirror stained by dust, Shines brilliantly when it has been cleansed, So the embodied one, on seeing the nature of the Self, Becomes unitary, his end attained, from sorrow, free’

Does the witnessing self ever rest ?

Q: Guruji, does the witnessing self ever rest? Does it rest when one is asleep or is it always resting?

Guruji : The witnessing consciousness, the one that witnesses is always at rest. The witness does not perform any action. If in the state of being a witness, the intention to act arises, it is performed by the mind. That activity happens in the mind or the intellect. Mind being transparent, it appears that the witness is witnessing through the mind. Then mind can get tired, mind can become active or can be in a state of rest. However, the witnessing consciousness is always at rest, it is never engaged in anything. That is why the best of the best deeds performed by anyone or the worst of the worst actions do not affect the witness. It always remains untouched, unperturbed and pure.

Know yourself so you may free yourself

You are provoked when you cannot stand the other person. You may be equally incited when you cannot stand yourself either. It is not always under the burden of being negative or bad, sometimes, you may be trying to be too good, too sweet, too accommodating. When you completely ignore your own needs, you feel down, you feel provoked in the most subtle manner. Such provocation can prompt you to act out of the same frustration as in anger.

Know yourself so you may free yourself. It takes a lot to be provoked if you are comfortable with yourself.

We call something astonishing or wonderful which is not ordinary. But if the same event happens every day, then we do not call it a wonder because we do not find anything really astonishing about it. When you suddenly see something different to what you usually see, then you say ‘Oh! This is surprising! This is a wonder’. So a secret is also like that. It is out of the ordinary. A mango tree will only bear mangoes as fruits. This is no secret. A coconut tree only bears coconuts. Is there anything secret about that? But if one day you see a mango growing from a coconut tree, then it is a wonder. You would say, ‘This is a miracle! It is such an astonishing thing to happen. It is extraordinary. If you observe carefully, many astonishing events are happening all the time and everywhere in this creation, and throughout Nature. But you need a special kind of vision to be able to see these astonishing events. We have to change the way we see things (meaning to shift towards a broad vision). That is called Yoga. It is said, when you see this creation from the perspective of Yoga, you find everything so wondrous; so astonishing. And even more astonishing than this is how everything in this creation is a manifestation of that which cannot be seen; a manifestation of the unmanifest consciousness! Everything in this creation has come out of empty space.
