Need of Keeping the Ancestor Happy?

When you meditate and you are in knowledge, that knowledge can pass on to the ancestors as well.

There is a beautiful ceremony in India called Tarpan. Tarpan means fulfilling, satisfying. A son or daughter prays for their ancestors, who have passed across, to be content and fulfilled. They take sesame seeds with water and they say ‘Tripyati, Tripyati, Tripyati’. Tripyati means be content.

The ceremony means, ‘You might be having small desires in the mind, they’re like the sesame seeds. Just drop them and move on, be content. We are here to fulfill your desires, don’t worry about these little things’. This is what they say.

So reading Yoga Vasishta (an ancient Indian text), and being in knowledge itself spreads the subtle light to other realms of existence. So they get fulfilled by you being happy and content, by you being in devotion, and in wisdom. That positive vibration reaches to other planes and touches them too. You don’t have to do any special thing for it.

Sometimes people feel that they are not getting the benefit of their meditation. It is because a portion of the merits of their meditation is being reaped elsewhere. Someone else is enjoying that. So, that is okay.

=======================

Where ever you are, when you simply become silent and go within yourself, that very moment, you find God.

=======================

A mature intellect is devoted, a mature heart is full of knowledge. Meditation matures your intellect as well as your heart.

=======================

Q. We are trying to reach our seventh level of existence. Do we have to cross all the levels or balance all to reach the self?

Guruji : They all exist simultaneously.

=======================

Q. What is your definition of Happiness?

Guruji : Happiness is the direction in which life tends to flow.

1. Humbly bowing down before the almighty Lord Sri Vishnu, the Lord of the three worlds, I recite maxims of the science of political ethics (niti) selected from the various satras (scriptures).

2. That man who by the study of these maxims from the satras acquires a knowledge of the most celebrated principles of duty, and understands what ought and what ought not to be followed, and what is good and what is bad, is most excellent.

3.Therefore with an eye to the public good, I shall speak that which, when understood, will lead to an understanding of things in their proper perspective.

4.Even a pandit comes to grief by giving instruction to a foolish disciple, by maintaining a wicked wife, and by excessive familiarity with the miserable.

5. A wicked wife, a false friend, a saucy servant and living in a house with a serpent in it are nothing but death.

6. One should save his money against hard times, save his wife at the sacrifice of his riches, but invariably one should save his soul even at the sacrifice of his wife and riches.

7. Save your wealth against future calamity. Do not say, “What fear has a rich man, of calamity?” When riches begin to forsake one even the accumulated stock dwindles away.

8. Do not inhabit a country where you are not respected, cannot earn your livelihood, have no friends, or cannot acquire knowledge.

9. Do not stay for a single day where there are not these five persons: a wealthy man, a brahmin well versed in Vedic lore, a king, a river and a physician.

Selfish or Useful

Your friends are a gift, your partner is a gift to you. Honor them rather than utilizing them.

In life there are two position you take. Whatever you get, either you make use of it; that is your selfishness. Or you be useful towards it (or them) and be grateful; this shows your expanded level of awareness. This shows that your consciousness is now matured. You are matured. You are not just making use of somebody but you are trying to be useful towards them.

=======================

Q: I have met you a number of times. But for the first time I feel that you are tired and are stressed from pressure of the whole responsibility of the universe.

Guruji : Of course, responsibility is there on the shoulders. You all can share it.

=======================

On full moon day, when you look at the moon your breath becomes musical. Looking at the moon, the prana in you becomes musical and life becomes harmonious.

=======================

Q: I have never done yoga in my life? What is yoga? Is it a meditation? Is it different postures of the body? If that is so, what are the scientific linkages between those things and what happens inside which leads to such dynamic effects in the form of resolution of conflict and giving us peace of mind?

Guruji : First, I would like to refute your first statement that you have never done yoga in your whole life. You have done it as a baby, but you don’t know it. Not a single child on this planet has grown up without doing yoga.

Babies, when they sleep, they are in the Chin Mudra while sleeping. In any part of the world you see, when babies are lying down they lift their legs first, and then they go on their belly and try to lift their shoulders. To some extent every child has done asanas on this planet.

Then coming to the breathing pattern – the way we breathe is different from the way a baby breathes. A baby has a stress-free mind, a happy mind. All the science of yoga is already there in a baby and as babies, we have all been yogis.

We are just going back to our roots.

Yoga has eight limbs; there are eight steps to it and one among them is physical postures. But, the central teaching is maintaining an equanimous state of mind.

‘Samatvam yoga uchayate’ – yoga brings equilibrium in the mind. When you can do any action with mindfulness, you are aware of what you are saying or doing, this makes you a yogi.

See, science is a systematic logical understanding of what is. In that sense, yoga is a science; it is a systematic understanding of the subject. Knowing ‘What this is’ is science. Knowing ‘Who am I’ is spirituality.

Why do we ring the bell in a temple?

You cannot think, ‘I am doing good work, but why are people criticizing me?’ It is their nature. The nature of a thorn is to prick and the nature of a flower is to spread fragrance. The world has both thorns and flowers. If the flower asks the thorn ‘Why do you prick?’ the thorn will answer ‘it is my nature’.

=========================

Q: Is it love or surrender when I feel your presence in meditation?

Guruji: Surrender with love. And that which happens with surrender is love.

=========================
Q: How to have strong will power?

Guruji: When you want to have strong will power, know that you already have it.
===========================
Q: I want to be your best instrument. Will you make me?

Guruji: Yes. Good. Good.
==========================
Q: Guruji, I feel I am stuck. I am unable to spread knowledge. What should I do?

Guruji: You don’t need to do that what you cannot do. Nobody expects you to do anything which you cannot do. But whatever you can do, you must do. This is because when we do service, it does good to other people, and that brings us immense satisfaction too.

Okay, before you leave, I want you to give me all your worries. I want you to go home with a big smile. And whenever you feel you are down, upset, not feeling happy or good, remember you are not alone! I am with you!

My dream is to see everyone with a big smile, and the whole world as one family. And I would like you all to join me in this dream to make a violence-free, stress-free, and happy society.

=========================

Q: Why do we ring the bell in a temple?

Guruji: Because there are so many thoughts wandering in your mind, with the sound of the bells you come into the present. Your thoughts come to a halt.

The drummers beat large drums, play the Naadaswaram, shehnai, bells, and conch. All these sounds are made so that your mind becomes quieter.

Your mind is like a kid. When a kid is crying, you cry louder than the kid and the kid becomes quiet. Have you noticed that? In the same way, when there is so much noise in your mind and too many thoughts, they blow the conch, ring the
bell and with all the sounds, the mind comes to the present moment.

With so much noise around, the mind cannot think. It cannot wander. So it is used as a technique.

All outside sounds suppress the sound of the mind for a little while. This short-term suppression should lead the mind to silence. Once it goes into the depths of meditation, all words feel burdensome. But when the mind is full of words, and you are troubled by too many thoughts, these sounds bring relief. Have you seen in the Buddhist monastery, there is a big gong? They ring the gong and that vibration will keep you silent. So, from sound to silence, the journey is very important.

Message on Christmas Eve

This time of the year when it is cold and nature is still and silent and it is darker, nature has less and less activity. Then in the middle of this springs celebration. See, when sun is there, there is so much activity. But at the time when there is very little sun, nature is sleeping, everything has gone into hibernation, the animals are quiet. In that still and quiet night, springs a celebration with lights, with joy, with love, and that is Christmas. So it is an outer symbolism for inner phenomenon. Inside also when you are still and quiet, when you are hibernating, then comes up from there a message of love. Stillness brings the message of love. In activity you are outward looking, in stillness you are inward looking. Love springs from looking inside.

The little mind is like the child. It is always dependent. And the big mind is like the mother. The individual self sleeps in the lap of the universal self. And that is the heavenly peace. Heavenly peace is not outside somewhere, heaven is when the small mind is in the lap of the big mind. When small mind is away from the big mind, then there is chaos, confusion, hell. Then the small mind starts crying and runs to the big mind, the mother, then it sleeps in heavenly peace. That peace is real peace. Holy, is when the mother and child are together. When you put the small mind in the lap of the big mind, that is meditation. Mother and child in heavenly peace is meditation.

======================

A Christmas tree bears the gifts and the lights not for itself. Similarly, all the gifts (Talents) you are carrying in your life are for others. Anyone who comes to you, offer them your gifts. When you show kindness, your true nature comes into play. Also remember that like how christmas tree leaves are ever green despite storm or snow, your life is evergreen and your spirit is eternal despite personal and social grief.

=======================

Celebration is the nature of the spirit. Any celebration has to be spiritual. A celebration without spirituality does not have any depth. And silence gives the depth to celebration.

=======================

Q: What is your message for Christmas?

Guruji: You are the Christmas tree that points upwards with branches on all sides. At the time of year when other trees are barren, you are green with many gifts to offer.

Make yourself hollow and empty first

Q: My mother’s negativity brings my positivity down.

Guruji: Why someone is negative? Because they do not feel good about themselves. When they are caught up in a self blame situation they will not listen to you. So praise them first and then tell them what you want to tell them.

===================

There is a leader within everyone. All that you have to do is simply awaken and enhance those abilities within yourself. This is a skill which everyone should know. It is present within everyone, only it is lying dormant in some people, while in some it is awakened and expressed.

===================

Q: In one of the meditations you say, ‘The nose is hollow and empty, the throat is hollow and empty’. When everything already is hollow and empty, then what is the use of taking our attention there during meditation? Should we not meditate upon God instead?

Guruji: To get there, at least make yourself hollow and empty first. First you must become hollow and empty like a flute. Then you will see that the harmony of the Divine will flow through you.

This is why in the great tradition of our Masters, it is said, ‘Neti Neti’ (not this, not this). It means, ‘It (Divinity) is not this, and it is not that also’. So in this way, they went on negating and rejecting every limited understanding of God, until they finally realized that everything is One Consciousness, and there is nothing beyond it.

God is not a person or some limited form, He is the Supreme power behind everything in this creation. God is the melodious harmony playing through this entire Creation. But to be able to recognize and listen to His music, you first need to become hollow and empty (meaning to drop one’s limited concepts, small desires and understanding).

This is why it is necessary to experience and become aware of that emptiness first. Only then will you be able to experience the totality of the Divine.

The Eleventh Commandment

Being in a crowd when you are alone is ignorance. Enlightenment is being alone in a crowd. Feeling of oneness in a crowd is a sign of wisdom. Knowledge of life brings confidence, and knowledge of death makes you fearless and centered.

What is fear? Fear of separatedness.

Celebrate while you are alone and when you are with people. Some know to celebrate when they are in a crowd. Some can only rejoice alone in silence. I tell you to do both.

Celebrate the silence and Celebrate the noise.

Celebrate the life and Celebrate the death.

This is the Eleventh Commandment!

=====================

Liberation means, that you have finally found rest (and this happens when you are finally free from all your desires and cravings). When the feeling dawns from deep within, ‘I am content, I do not want anything’, and you have fulfilled all your duties and responsibilities, then you are liberated.

=====================

Look for Goodness

In everything, goodness is there. Our goal is to find it. In every person, the best is there; our job is to recognize it. In every situation, the positive is there; our opportunity is to see it. In every problem, the solution is there; our responsibility is to provide it. In every setback, the success is there; our adventure is to discover it. In every crisis, the reason is there; our challenge is to understand it. By seeing the goodness, we’ll be very enthusiastic and our lives will be all the richer.

======================

Procrastination

There is usually a tendency to postpone things to the last moment. When the situation demands that I finish the job and at the same time if unforeseen things come up, I tend to feel pressurized. I then am not able to do the job well and begin to wish that I had more time. I need to understand the importance of time and do the job needed to be done immediately. I need to understand the fact that if I lose this moment, there is no chance of getting it back again. If I use the time at hand
fruitfully, I’ll always be able to remain light and be available to things that come up suddenly.
