How can we end crime against Women, particularly in metropolitan cities of India?

Q: How can we end crime against Women, particularly in metropolitan cities of India?

Guruji: How did you catch my thought? I was also thinking the same thing, how can we help women in the metropolitan cities of India. As I said, first of all we need to create more support groups and women watch. We have taken up one thing now, i.e., conducting happiness surveys. In this survey, volunteers go door to door and find out the main cause of problems in each home. Why people are not happy? If families are not happy, if communities are not happy, then violence increases in the society. That kind of social interaction, perhaps, will help.

Stringent laws and courts are needed to punish the guilty, but that happens only after a crime has happened. Before that we need to create a big wave of awareness campaigns to stop crime against women. As I already mentioned, intoxicants are one of the main reasons. People who are addicts create problems in society. And addiction is because they are not happy. A happy person doesn’t go in for addiction. Addiction is because they are not happy inside. We need to bring that sense of comfort and care in the hearts of people, for the people around them. I think we can think about a million such plans of how we can change our society, and how we can bring more togetherness, because we had this in this country, not too long ago. When we were kids, we grew up with ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. If someone gets aggressive in the classroom, everyone would look at him, ‘Hey, you have lost it. You better get back to yourself’. This was the idea.

Today if you are aggressive, you are a hero. Those days, if you were compassionate, then you were a hero, then you would be appreciated. So, the ego or pride getting attached to violence and aggression is one of the causes of violence in society. And I would say, these violent movies our kids see, in this country and elsewhere in the world, also desensitizes them against crime. If you are shooting in your video games every day, you are shooting the ships, you are shooting the planes and you are shooting people, then taking a real gun and shooting doesn’t hurt them; it doesn’t even register as a crime in the mind. They become so thick skinned.

That is why I would say, all these violent games should be done away with. How many of you agree with me on this? Violent games that the kids play should be done away with. They should be given more sensitivity towards life, towards animals, and towards people. Education and awareness can play a big role. Stringent laws on the political level are required. But also communities working together, and not just putting all the load on the government, will make a big difference.

Reason and Faith

Reason is living in the known. Faith is adventuring in the unknown. Reason is repetition and routine. Faith is exploration and adventure.

When people went on a rocket to the moon, they had faith. They didn’t go on a suicide mission, but they had faith that they would return, and so they ventured into the unknown.

A scientific mind always likes to venture into the unknown, otherwise it is not science. If you’re reeling in all that which you have already known, that is reason, and that is repetition. Science is an adventure into the unknown, and that is faith. Usually people think, what science has to do with faith. I say that without faith you cannot explore science. The deeper you go, it is so interesting.

92 years old and still teaching yoga

Age is no barrier for this 92-year-old yoga teacher. Vivien Vieritz has been practicing yoga for 60 years and teaching it for 50.

In her years of practicing yoga, she has perfected the poses and impressed world renown yoga guru Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar with her head stands.

“It’s quite an honor to be a teacher; to help people to help themselves with posture and I really believe that everyone should do yoga for strength as they get older.

“I am so strong I cannot believe it myself. Two weeks ago I square danced all afternoon for three hours and my partner was a young man of 26. I was the envy of all the ladies in the club,” says Vivien with a laugh.

“And then that night I did ballroom dancing for four hours with another 26 year-old. He’s about six-foot and I’m about four-foot and nothing.

“I just have so much fun and I just think I’m so lucky and I’m so pleased that years ago I got into yoga.”

A Caboolture resident, Vivien says she was the second yoga teacher on the Sunshine Coast – the first being a German lady who moved to Australia during World War II.

“I’m an Iyengar yoga instructor, so it’s not easy yoga, I teach a lot of the Iyengar postures and I’m a bit of a perfectionist.

“I encourage the people to do the postures correctly and I really enjoy teaching.

“I like people to work to their full capacity and always feel like they’re going a bit further than their comfort zone because that’s when you really experience yoga.”

Vivien says yoga has kept her strong and flexible.

“I can still do cartwheels and splits and head stands and hand stands. When I tell people that they nearly fall over, they really don’t believe me. They think I’m telling fibs.

“I love doing the headstand, I’m just so comfortable, I feel like what Mr. Iyengar looks,” says Vivien cheekily.

“Getting a compliment from Mr. Iyengar …well that’s the most unusual thing I have ever experienced.

“After rousing at 14 other people on the stage in Sydney, Mr. Iyengar complimented my headstand… he said ‘well, at last, we have a decent headstand’. And I couldn’t believe it,” recounts Vivien.

“His assistant said it was the first time he has ever complimented anyone, because he never compliments anyone, no matter how good they are.”

Vivien shares her motto for life

For a healthy mind and body, Vivien recommends a weekly dose of yoga.

“I actually feel the same way as I did in my fifties and sixties. I just do what I want to do, whatever it is, nothing is impossible, only to those who believe it is.

“That is my motto, and it’s a good motto for everybody.

“If you think you can do something, try it, have a go, my magic word is attitude. If you have the right attitude, whatever happens to you in life, if you have the right attitude you will cope,” says Vivien.

Donating every dollar she collects from her classes to give to charities, Vivien says she will teach yoga until she’s called away.

“I don’t think about stopping, it hasn’t entered my head, so I think I’ll be teaching right up until the last, whenever that is… and it could be a little while yet I hope.
“Please get into yoga and keep it up for the rest of your life,” says Vivien enthusiastically.

Are Shiva and Shakti Opposites?

Shiva and Shakti are the same, that is why the concept of Ardhanarishwar, who is half Shiva and half Parvati. This is true in all of us; in each one, there is a mother’s DNA and a father’s DNA; a male aspect and a female aspect, and together you become complete. Physically, you may be a woman, but you have your father’s aspect inside of you. Is it that only females are born out of females and males are born out of males? No! Inside each one of you, there is a male aspect and a female aspect.

Shiva and Shakti are one, yet they are different. Parvati means Shakti (the manifest world, i.e., air, earth, fire, water, air, mind, ego and memory), Shiva is the unmanifest. The form and the formless are married; like your mind is formless, the body is form, and they are married.

Yet, it is all just one wave function when you go to Quantum Mechanics; there is no male, no female. However, when you want to have a baby, you cannot say that it is all one Quantum Mechanics, it is different there. When you want to eat food, Quantum Mechanics does not work there. You should know what to eat and what not to eat correct? So, the world of differences and the world of unity co-exist, yet they are different. That is why it is said that the unmanifest Shiva tatva has no parallel, there is no two; it is complete.

As Shiva, as a male energy, (it is) consciousness; then there is female energy, i.e., the manifest universe or the body. When you talk about body and mind, then there are two things, the manifest and the unmanifest. But when you talk about atoms or wave function in Quantum Mechanics, it is all just one vibration.

When you watch television, you see an episode, but if you see it from another angle, you perceive electronic waves. On the other side, you are seeing an episode, and getting some information; they are not opposite. In fact, they are interwoven in nature.

===========================

It is our duty to try and keep everyone happy. Whether they choose to be happy or not is up to them.

===========================

In deep sub-conscious states, we can more easily change our emotional state and thought patterns because we bypass the beta mind state. Think of beta as your conscious mind that acts as a fence or border keeping you from your subconscious mind. When you pass through this border, you enter the subconscious realm where you can plant new ideas and beliefs, deep in the ground where they can take root..”

Creativity

Creativity is what is common in both science and arts. One part of our brain (left brain) is for logic and the other part (right brain) is for music. Now what is common to both of them? It is creativity, and creativity does not come when you are stressed out, but it comes out of centeredness. The more we are centered the more creativity spontaneously comes out of us.

So, if you are painter, I would suggest to you not to go on looking at other people’s paintings. But instead listen to music. This idea may be completely revolutionary because most people who are painters are taught to only study the work of other painters. They are not told to listen to music. But I think that you should stop looking at other painting and listen to music, and then just take your brush and start painting.

When I was in school, I read so many poems written by others. I thought, ‘Oh, I wanted to write but someone has already written about this’. So if you are a poet, then stop reading poems written by others. When I stopped reading poems written by others, then I started writing my own poems.

If you want to be a creative cook, then don’t go on referring to cook books. You do your own experiments. If you want to be creative in cooking, never ever read any cook book. I think that this really works.

Another thing that is very important for creativity is intuition. You should become hollow and empty, and be centered to be intuitive and creative. Intuition is also very important for any business man. When you invest based on your intuition then you are successful. For business you need intuition, for politics you need intuition, for creativity you need intuition, for discovery and science you need intuition. And for intuition what do you need? Meditation!

=====================

Many times people say, ‘Oh, nobody understands me’. Instead they should say, ‘I haven’t been able to express myself’. If you have the skill to express (that comes from intelligence) then there can be no misunderstanding.

=====================

Q: How to act passionately after being trained to be dispassionate?

Guruji: You cannot create passion, when you love something it simply comes to you. You cannot ask me how do I love something, there is no way, no method. Sometimes repetition might create an attachment but I wouldn’t say it is love. I have seen people who are fighting and when one person is not there anymore or has gone far away then one feels some sort of vacuum suddenly. Every day you are fighting with someone and suddenly that person is not there, what to do now? This is a sort of attachment, but passion that is something which cannot be cultivated, it just comes to you. Dispassion can be cultivated to some extent but compassion and passion cannot be cultivated.

Signs of Intelligence

One of the characteristics of intelligence is being alert. You can’t say that I am intelligent but I am a little sleepy. So intelligence means alertness. Are you all alert now?

When we are alert what happens ? Our perception and our observation improves, and our expression becomes perfect. Many times people say, ‘Oh, nobody understands me’. Instead they should say, ‘I haven’t been able to express myself’. If you have the skill to express (that comes from intelligence) then there can be no misunderstanding. So perception, observation and expression, all these comes from being alert.

Now if you keep yourself very alert for a longer period of time, what happens? You get tired and feel exhausted. So, it’s not in the nature of our brain to be alert all the time. So what we need is relaxation. Often the type of relaxation we know is taking a pillow and going to sleep, that’s it. Sleep is necessary, but there is another type of relaxation where you are alert and at the same time relaxed.

It’s like Sushi, i.e., the rice wrapped in seaweed. The seaweed is cold but the rice is hot (when you wrap it). In the same way, you have alertness and relaxation, and that is meditation.

So we have counted three aspects to intelligence:
Alertness
Proper perception & observation
Right expression
Efficiency and Creativity are another aspect of intelligence.

Another sign of intelligence is the ability to resolve conflict! Fools create conflicts in oneself and others. An intelligent person knows how to resolve conflicts in oneself and in the surrounding.

If someone is very creative but creates a lot of conflicts, you say, ‘Oh my god, that’s not intelligence’, isn’t it?

If you put an intelligent person between a conflict, will there be more conflict or will he reduce it? He will reduce or resolve it, isn’t it! The tendency to bring harmony is a sign of intelligence. The ability to find a solution is sign of intelligence.

Another sign of intelligence is not getting stressed, and if you get stressed, to know how to get over stress. This is intelligence.

Intelligence is to know how much to use our mind and our body, and not overusing it. If we overuse our mind and our body we get drained, exhausted and tired. Intelligence is walking the fine line of the middle path. That’s what lord Buddha has said.

Ramkrishna Paramahansa and Swami Vivekanand

1. Swami Vivekanand:- I can’t find free time. Life has become hectic.

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Activity gets you busy. But productivity gets you free.

2. Swami Vivekanand:- Why has life become complicated now?

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Stop analyzing life.. It makes it complicated. Just live it.

3. Swami Vivekanand:- Why are we then constantly unhappy?

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Worrying has become your habit. That’s why you are not happy.

4. Swami Vivekanand:- Why do good people always suffer?

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Diamond cannot be polished without friction. Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don’t suffer. With that experience their life becomes better, not bitter.

5. Swami Vivekanand:- You mean to say such experience is useful?

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Yes. In every term, Experience is a hard teacher.

6. Swami Vivekanand:- Because of so many problems, we don’t know where we are heading…

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- If you look outside you will not know where you are heading. Look inside. Eyes provide sight. Heart provides the way.

7. Swami Vivekanand:- Does failure hurt more than moving in the right direction?

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Success is a measure as decided by others. Satisfaction is a measure as decided by you.

8. Swami Vivekanand:- In tough times, how do you stay motivated?

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Always look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go. Always count your blessing, not what you are missing.

9. Swami Vivekanand:- What surprises you about people?

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- When they suffer they ask, “why me?” When they prosper, they never ask “Why me?”

10. Swami Vivekanand:- How can I get the best out of life?

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear.

11. Swami Vivekanand:- One last question. Sometimes I feel my prayers are not answered.

Ramkrishna Paramahansa:- There are no unanswered prayers. Keep the faith and drop the fear. Life is a mystery to solve, not a problem to resolve. Trust me. Life is wonderful if you know how to live.

Acceptance and Appreciation

Life is open just like a door. When we label ourselves as doors, and when we become conscious of our own labeling; then we create the personality of a door and the opportunity to close that door.

We become selective. This is good this is bad. This hurts me, this is ok. I like this. I dont like that. All of that means closing the door and opening the door according to that created personality.

Acceptance means to be part of life, not separated from it. Acceptance is to observe, watch, acknowledge, then we can appreciate.

Ravi wakes up. He goes right to the coffee machine. He serves himself some coffee in a small cup. He spills the coffee on the floor. Ravi gets upset. He makes his small tantrum of the day with some sort of jerky jumping and by automatically selecting 4 letter words to express his frustration.

Ravi cannot accept the fact of spilling coffee.

Every action has a consequence. Ravi will need to clean up his mess.

The question is: What is the usefulness of getting upset?

Going deeper into this, we could observe that there is no benefit whatsoever other than waking Ravi up quickly from his morning drowsiness into a bad mood.

However, there is more to it

Ravi, started his day upset. That feeling will color his activities in that morning until he fully wakes up.

Ravi will brush his teeth, take a shower and get ready for work in a very sloppy manner. His movements will be harsh, quick and without grace; without consciousness.
All of that means further mistakes throughout the day.

Because Ravi forgot to drink his coffee, Ravi continued his day with the feeling that something was missing.

That thought was bothering him while he started driving his car to go to work. Ravi put some music on to add more noise to his already clouded mind. Ravi passed a red light inadvertently. A police officer stopped him. Ravi got a ticket.

That definitely woke him up for the rest of the day!

Acceptance is not an intellectual exercise. It is a lifestyle, an attitude towards life. When we accept something, we can look at whatever life brings without preconceptions, then we can see more avenues for change.

Let us say that Jay likes to call his supervisor, Rafi by using the term buddy. Something like: Hey, How are you doing buddy! His supervisor does not approve of that. However, Jay forgets and one day calls him buddy in front of another employee. Most supervisors could react right there and put Jay in his place. That is a reaction out of anger. A babyish reaction to get respect.

Respect based on fear is not respect at all.

The following day, Rafi sent an email to Jay and cc: to the other employee as well, commenting on the incident and stating clearly his expectations on professionalism and that there will be a consequence next time this happens.

After that email, Ravi did not talk about the incident anymore.

Jay changed. Jan wasn’t offended for he understood the issue clearly. Jay wasn’t denigrated in front of other employees either. No eye for eye.

Acceptance, appreciation of the situation as it is and then moving on by creating a new situation based on spiritual values, means respecting life as it is, without trying to control it, without trying to close a door which is meant to be open.

Total Acceptance

In life we see all types of people – some are completely foolish, some are very wise. We see a wide range of behavior patterns, tendencies and emotions. Everything ultimately is a part of the Universal Spirit, a part of the One Reality. So just accept and take everything along. That is the message of Shivaratri. Do not get stuck anywhere, just keep moving ahead in life with this total acceptance – of oneself and of one’s surroundings.

Many times we become choosy of what we accept. Sometimes we accept the situation but we do not accept ourselves. Or we accept ourselves the way we are but we do not accept the other people around us. Neither of these alone can lead you to a sense of completion or fullness. You have to look into both (acceptance towards oneself and acceptance towards the situation) – that is, you should accept whatever is inside and whatever is outside. So just let things be. This is the way to go inward.

What stops you from experiencing that deep inner peace or silence? Our mind thinking that ‘This should be like this’ or ‘This is not how it should be’.

Or we think that ‘People should be like this and not like that’, etc. That is what blocks our mind from settling in silence. When you keep thinking in this manner, your mind is still at the periphery, and this keeps you from retrieving the mind to the center. For the mind to be able to go to its source, the mantra is let it be!

Then you are able to go to the center. Once you are at the center, then whatever sankalpa you take starts to manifest, and things start happening.

=======================

In life we see all types of people – some are completely foolish, some are very wise. We see a wide range of behavior patterns, tendencies and emotions. Everything ultimately is a part of the Universal Spirit, a part of the One Reality. So just accept and take everything along.

=======================

Q: I get irritated with my family members but I can be good to others? What should I do?

Guruji: Just go through it. As you grow with knowledge, it will get better.

=======================

Just say one thing to yourself, ‘I want nothing!’ This wanting nothing gives you the deepest of the rests.
