The Kamakhya Devi temple

The Kamakhya Devi temple is one of the most important temples in India. It is at the top level of Shakti (Devanagari: शक्ति) power sites that emanate the energy, the concept, the power, the force, empowerment (for better words) of the universal energy, divine feminine embodiment, that is creative. Alone it is the Divine Power. Today we see Shakti mainly as Devi, the goddess, the Divine Mother. The formal religious practice of Shaki is through the cult Shaktism (Sanskrit: शाक्तं), that holds this Divine feminine power, as without equal, alone, Brahman (ब्रह्मन्), that universal supreme, the “it” that supports the actual contents of the “universe”, all, everything.

In the traditions of Shaivism (Shiva) and Vaishnavism (Vishnu), Devi becomes a “part” of, the feminine counterpart, of the male/female principle, Prakriti (प्रकृति) / Purusha (पुरुष). In our times, one of the popular forms of Shakti is portrayed as Dākshāyani (Devanagari: दाक्षायणी) or Satī (सती), the goddess who was the first wife of Shiva, and later reincarnated as Parvati. In previous times Shakti pre-dated Parvati and Sati, and was an entity alone. Shakti is arguably the first concept of a “Divine”. The story of Sati is well known. It is a Divine Play (in the Western tradition we might say Mystery play, or allegorical drama), illustrative, mystical, dramatic, that combines and binds Shaktism and Shaivism to one another. One of the main features of the Sati story/drama, is the creation of the concept of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the important temple centers of Shakti worship which are located in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Tibet. According to accounts top among these are the four Adi Shakti Peeth, of which the Kamakhya Temple in Assam is one. It says that it is here that the yoni, genitals, vagina, or womb of Sati fell. As such the Kamakhya Shakti temple is a revered center of Shaktism, and worship of Devi across all traditions.
