Good and the Evil

Man’s effort since his birth, nay for years and births unlimited, has been to avoid pain and evil and to gain happiness and good. But at the end of the day this goal seems no better than a mirage. The reason is that we often fail to realize that this world and our existence in it are made of contradictory pairs.

Everywhere one moves through these tremendous contradictions of joy and sorrow. Wherever there is good there must also be evil and wherever there are hopes of smiles there must also be the fear of tears. In other words, ours is not a world where we can hope to eradicate evil completely and establish a reign of complete goodness and vice versa. Come what may, notwithstanding the moral and virtuous degeneration of our present world there must always remain some goodness in human life and society.

If there is the power of producing smile in us there also lurks the power of bringing tears. If we can make one happy we can also make them miserable. The world is essentially a mixture of good and evil, happiness and misery and all our efforts to increase one must result in a proportionate increase of the other.

In brief the good and the bad are not the two cut and dried separate entities but they are the two sides of the same coin. It may seem ironical but it is a fact that the same thing or action which appears to be good and pleasing today will be treated as bad and painful tomorrow. The fire that burns one, also cooks a good meal for the starving man. Our nerves that carry the sensations of misery also carry the message of joy and thrill.

So life without death and happiness without misery are hollow and rather unimaginable. They are just a different manifestation of the same thing. Call this Maya if you like, but this is the reality – harsh or soft – or our human world.
